LORI CLARK VIVIANO: Fathers' rights has many aspects to it. Those are paternity actions in which the child was born out of wedlock, rights of the father in a marriage, and fathers trying to establish themselves as an active part of their children's lives.
I predominantly represent fathers. I feel it's important for them to establish a relationship with their children if they haven't had one because it's a paternity action. And I feel it's important for fathers to realize that they are important in what they need to do to have an active role in their children's lives.
Most fathers when they come to me do not realize that they need to establish paternity if they have not married the woman. The second thing that men want to establish is they want to know what they're entitled to. Can they have rights as to where their children go to school, their visitation, their religious aspects? And I tell them all of that and what they realistically can expect based on the child's age.
I know that a lot of fathers are concerned that they don't have as many rights as mothers. Fathers are considered an equal importance. But they need to establish that. They need to let the courts know this is what they want to do, that their children are important to them.
